What is CNC Machining?

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining is a common manufacturing process that uses automated high-speed cutting tools to remove material from a metal or plastic workpiece. Standard CNC machines include 3-, 4- and 5-axis milling machines, lathes and routers. The way a machine cuts a CNC part can vary – the workpiece may remain stationary while the tool moves, the tool may remain stationary while the workpiece rotates and moves, or the tool and workpiece may move together.

When a machinist receives a CAD model (also known as a 3D data set), they start to create tool paths based on the 3D data set. Skilled machinists know how to optimise toolpaths to reduce CNC machining costs and achieve tight tolerances. CNC machines can cut virtually any material, including metal alloys, plastics, wood, stone, ceramics and more. Custom machined parts are required in virtually every industry, including automotive, robotics, medical, aerospace, electronics and industrial. YOUDE offers CNC machining services and provides custom CNC quotes for a wide range of materials, from plain aluminium, steel, stainless steel, ABS and acetal to high grade titanium, Inconel and engineering plastics such as PTFE, PPS, PEI and PEEK.

Surface Finishes for CNC Machined Parts

In addition to our custom CNC machining services, we offer complete surface finishing solutions for precision machined parts. If you need a custom surface finishing solution that is not listed, please contact us and we would be honored to customize our services for you.

CNC-As-machined

As machined (Ra 3.2μm / Ra 126μin)

The fastest finishing option. A surface finish that results directly from the machining process, without additional polishing or treatment, characterized by visible tool marks and high dimensional accuracy.

Smooth-machining

Smooth machining (Ra 1.6μm / Ra 63μin)

Smooth machining is like machining but with less visible marks. Parts are machined at lower speeds, so there's no need for hand polishing.

Polishing

Polishing (Ra 0.8μm / Ra 32μin or better)

A finishing process that enhances surface smoothness and shine, achieving a low roughness average (Ra) for improved aesthetics and reduced friction.

Spray painting

Spray painting

Spray painting is a surface treatment process used to apply paint or coatings for protection or aesthetics, commonly applied to plastic, metal, and other materials

Bead-Blasting

Bead Blasting

A surface finishing process that uses fine glass beads to create a smooth, matte texture, removing imperfections and providing a uniform appearance.

Tumbling

Tumbled

Tumbling is a process of vibrating parts to remove sharp edges. Tumbling can also remove marks from parts that aren't machined.

Bead-blasted-+-Anodizing-type-II

Bead blasted + Anodizing type II

Before anodizing, parts are blasted to improve corrosion resistance and appearance.

Bead-blasted-+-Anodized-type-III-(Hardcoat)

Bead blasted + Anodized type III (Hardcoat)

Before anodizing, parts are sandblasted to #120 grit. Type III is thicker and more abrasion-resistant than Type II.

Black-Oxide

Black Oxide

A surface treatment that applies a thin, corrosion-resistant black coating to steel or iron parts, enhancing appearance and providing mild protection without altering dimensions.

Powder-Coated

Powder Coated

A durable finishing process where a powder is electrostatically applied and then cured under heat, creating a tough, protective, and uniform coating with various color options.

Chromate-Conversion-Coating

Chromate Conversion Coating

A corrosion-resistant surface treatment applied to metals, primarily aluminum, providing a protective layer that enhances paint adhesion and resists oxidation.

CNC-Plating

Plating

This group includes nickel, silver, gold, zinc, chrome, and tin plating. It reduces corrosion, improves appearance and functionality, and increases solderability and conductivity.

From Concept to Production

Whether you need a small number of parts or 10,000+ final production parts, CNC machining is an ideal manufacturing process. Below are the custom CNC services that YOUDE offers.

Prototype Machining
Production-Machining

Prototype Machining

With YOUDE you can have a CNC machined prototype in a matter of days, with ultra short lead times allowing you to quickly validate your design.

Low-Volume Machining

CNC machining is a cost-effective way to produce certain types of parts in small or medium batches. For example, 1 to 1,000 pieces.

Production Machining

Using CNC machines and robotics is the best way to mass produce and avoid heavy labour. Costs are greatly reduced.

CNC Machining FAQs

What's CNC Machining?

CNC Machining (Computer Numerical Control Machining) is a precision manufacturing process that uses computerized controls to operate machine tools such as lathes, mills, routers, and grinders. It removes material from a workpiece to create custom-designed parts with high accuracy and repeatability. Commonly used materials include metals, plastics, and composites, making CNC machining ideal for prototypes, low-volume production, and complex designs in industries like aerospace, automotive, and medical devices.

What are your CNC machining capabilities?

Our CNC machining capabilities include:

  1. Precision Machining: We can produce complex parts with tight tolerances (±0.005 mm or better), ensuring high accuracy for intricate designs.

  2. Material Range: We work with a wide variety of materials, including metals like aluminum, steel, brass, titanium, and plastics like ABS, POM, and PEEK.

  3. Multi-Axis Machining: Our 3, 4, and 5-axis CNC machines allow for advanced geometries and complex parts in a single setup, reducing lead times and ensuring consistency.

  4. Prototyping and Production: We handle everything from rapid prototyping to small-batch production and large-scale manufacturing runs.

  5. Surface Finishing: We offer a variety of finishes, including polishing, bead blasting, anodizing, powder coating, and more, to meet aesthetic and functional requirements.

  6. Threading and Tapping: We can machine precise internal and external threads for various fastener applications.

  7. Tolerances: High-precision tolerances that meet industry standards, ideal for aerospace, medical, automotive, and industrial applications.

Do you have a minimum order quantity?

NO! – No minimum quantity! YD offers rapid prototyping and short- to medium-run production machining services.

What general tolerances can YD achieve?

General CNC Machining Tolerances on metal to +/- 0.005″ (+/- 0.127 mm) following ISO 2768 unless otherwise specified. CNC Plastics and composites will be +/- 0.010”(+/- 0.254 mm).

What precision tolerances can YD achieve?

CNC Precision Machining Tolerances down to ±.0002″ (0.01mm). YD can manufacture and inspect to tight tolerances per your drawing specifications.

How quickly can I get my parts?

Lead times are 1 to 3 weeks for prototypes and 4 weeks for production runs. Emergency and rush services are available, according to the parts structure and quantity.

How can I pay for my order?

YD accepts payment in two ways: 1. Bank to bank wire transfer 2. PayPal
